Aboard a marine research vessel in the Drake Passage, a man named Riley cuts his left arm with a switchblade just hours before his solo mission to the bottom of the Sanguine Deep. Fearing his lapse into self-violence being exposed, he hides from his crewmates in the latrine and realizes that it may not be much longer before he succumbs to the pain his mind creates. He boards his submersible and descends.
And once alone in the abyss-more alone than he's ever been-his impulse to self-harm returns. But as he acts, a strange light shows through the porthole, and then all power cuts in the sub, leaving him sinking. What follows is the discovery of a far plane constructed from the emanating waves of mankind's psyche, an oppressed race of beings not unlike mankind itself, and ancient Gnostic deities exercising their power.
In a dark odyssey through this hidden world, Riley will either reckon with his private suffering, or cease carrying on.
