Theater braucht Räume. Räume, in denen sich Menschen begegnen können und vorübergehend eine Gemeinschaft bilden. Räume, um neue, experimentelle Ästhetiken zu entwickeln und für soziale Experimente. Aber auch einen öffentlichen Raum für die Auseinandersetzung des Publikums mit der darstellenden Kunst, mit sich selbst und untereinander. In diesem Buch haben die Räume der Freien Szene in der Theaterstadt Berlin selbst einen Auftritt.

Sie alle waren seit 2016 am Performing Arts Festival Berlin beteiligt. Ein erster Versuch, die freien Räume für die darstellenden Künste in ihrer Breite und Unterschiedlichkeit abzubilden. Dabei will das Buch auch der Herkunft dieser Orte nachspüren, ihrer Geschichtlichkeit und dem Wandel ihrer Funktion im jeweils speziellen sozialen und topografischen Umfeld der Stadtlandschaft. It also needs a public space for the encounter of the audience with the performing arts, with itself and between individual members of the audience. In this book, the spaces of the independent performing arts community in the theater metropolis of Berlin take center stage.
33 performing arts venues in Berlin are profiled in this richly illustrated volume. They have all been part of the Berlin Performing Arts Festival since 2016. It is a first attempt to present the independent spaces for the performing arts in Berlin in all of their breadth and diversity. In doing so, this book also explores the origins of these spaces, their respective histories and the ways in which their function has changed in their social and topographical environments within the urban landscape.
