If you left, you left for good and if you chose to stay in the church, you could never partake in the things that you had when you had been in Rumspringa. There was no second chance. If you made a choice to join the church and then went back on it, you would be shunned and no one in the community could ever speak to you again unless you repented publicly to the church and turned away from your sin.
If you never joined the church you might be allowed to speak to your parents but you would never again be a true member of the community. Now John is excited about Lovina's return from her Rumspringa and eager to resume their romance but the time apart has changed her.
