"Among Those Awake, " plunges the reader into a disorienting awakening aboard the seed-ship Endless Ocean. Leif, one of the "sleepers" preserved in stasis for thousands of years-discovers that his brief perception of time is vastly distorted. The "awake crew" of the ship, who have undergone extreme physical mutations and cultural evolution over millennia, now see the sleepers as mythic figures and demand one of them as a sacrifice.
Leif is fated to be a bridge between two wildly divergent human evolutions within the hull of the wandering generation ship.
