He divided New York's underworld into five territories, each ruled by a family, all bound by a governing council known as The Commission. It was this innovation that made the Mafia more than crime - it became organisation.
Across the following decades, America's Cosa Nostra integrated itself into the very fabric of the nation. Members infiltrated unions and construction companies, formed alliances with politicians, and bankrolled casinos from Havana to Las Vegas. The Mafia became one of America's largest invisible industries, generating billions while maintaining the illusion of fading relevance. But no empire lasts forever.
