Alec MacEwan: Reporter, the reader is introduced to Alec the hard drinking disgraced reporter who was born in Glasgow. He moved to Toronto when he was 12 and worked his way to being a celebrated print reporter who wore Armani suits and got the scoop. That is until his fall from grace due to a salacious scandal ended his career. It was political, involving an up and coming politician and his wife. Alec claimed he was framed but he lost in court, his wife divorced him and his profession turned on him.
As a blogger he eked out a living. But when a person he was to interview got butchered in front of him and he himself got slashed, Alec found himself back in the news. Another murder and the Toronto Police service had no suspects. Investigation uncovered ties with the politician's daughter. Canadian Security Intelligence Service got involved but motive was not forthcoming. A controversial professor working on thousands of pieces of parchment from the Gobleki Tepe site might be the actual target and the motive could be religious not political. The professor was about to publish his findings implying the origin of monotheism.
Corporate and international governmental interests were uncovered and things get complicated. Enter the Consortium, a group of computer super geeks who make Anonymous look like amateurs. Alec gets caught up with them and along the way uncovers information regarding his past. The consortium and Alec develop an online news source and the story of the murders and possible motive make their online news source a hit.
But who is the killer and what is the motive? Is it political, religious and what do the RCMP and CSIS know?
