Melissa's surprise arrival home reveals a betrayal of immense proportions that she finds hard to comprehend. After deciding to drown her sorrows, Melissa's night takes a surprising turn when an unexpected rescuer steps in and removes her from harm. Reeling from the news of her mother's illness, Melissa turns to her unlikely saviour for support. Disregarding the rumours the townfolk spread about Zach's character, Melissa finds comfort in his presence.            Despite his grumpy nature, the ex-convict has a soft spot for Melissa, and after she is forced into proximity by an injury, the two grow closer.
Pressed by Melissa, Zach reveals the truth about his conviction, and the Anderson family open their arms to the man. While Melissa struggles to get a foothold in Fleetwood's medical community, John Anderson becomes Zach's mentor, and the affection between the family and Zach grows.            Overwhelmed by constant interference from her ex-boyfriend's family, Melissa admits defeat and offers to work for Zach at his refurbished garage.
As she searches for employment in the medical field, two things keep her tied to Fleetwood: her gravely ill mother and growing affection for Zach.    After Zach's assault, his brother arrives on the scene and, following an argument with Melissa, cuts off all contact with the man Melissa has come to love. With no way to contact Zach, Melissa follows her parents' example and leaves Fleetwood.            Zach's family's opposition keeps the couple apart, supported by a web of lies.
