Résumé

Rachel Barnes has spent most of her adult life building a quiet, ordinary happiness. She has a loving husband, a career she cares about, and a home where she finally feels safe. The past is behind her... or so she believes. Then, at a neighbourhood picnic, a stranger laughs and the sound stops her cold. It is a laugh she hasn't heard in decades, yet she knows it instantly. A sound from a childhood she rarely speaks about.
A sound that once meant danger was coming. Rachel tells herself it is only a coincidence. She tells herself she's overreacting. But the more she learns about the man behind that familiar laugh, the harder it becomes to ignore the memories she's spent a lifetime keeping buried. With Greg, the husband who has always stood beside her, Rachel begins confronting a past she thought she'd escaped. But what begins as a terrifying reminder of everything she left behind soon leads to an unexpected discovery.
One that forces Rachel to reconsider the man she remembers, the family she thought she knew, and the future she thought was already written. Some wounds don't disappear simply because the years pass. Sometimes healing begins when we finally stop running from them. And sometimes, the sound we fear most can become the sound that leads us home.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, P. J. Lowry is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a BA in English language and literature.
