Résumé

Elias is forty-nine, a night janitor in Cambridge, Massachusetts, carrying a guitar he can't play and a box of cassette tapes he can't listen to. Thirty years ago, a betrayal he never got the chance to apologize for ended in a car crash on Memorial Drive. Every night since, he's visited her grave in Mount Auburn Cemetery and said the same four words to a stone that never answers. Then one gray October dawn, she's there - sitting on the grass beside her own headstone, twenty years old, warm-handed, exactly as she looked the last night he saw her alive. He brings her home. At first, it's everything he's spent three decades grieving: her laugh, her stories, the easy warmth he thought he'd buried with her.
But the stories don't change. They repeat, word for word, laugh for laugh, like a tape looping on the same groove. And when the stories run out, she crosses to the darkest corner of the apartment and simply stops - no breath, no blink, no reflection in any mirror in the house - until he learns exactly what she needs from him to come back. As the days pass, Elias grows paler. Thinner. His own reflection starts to fade at the edges.
Hers gets warmer, more solid, more *alive* - and he begins to understand that whatever this is, it was never a resurrection. It's an exchange, running on rules neither of them agreed to, and the terms are almost paid in full. A slow-burn psychological horror novel. A Stillness in the Dark is a story about grief, guilt, and the particular danger of getting exactly what you asked for.
