Résumé

This first edition of this book published and distributed by Textbook Media Press under a non-exclusive distribution agreement was intended as both a supplemental "mini-textbook" to accompany primary textbooks on business law, the legal environment of business and other law-related college courses as these generally do not cover immigration law or immigration compliance. In this second, updated edition which is aimed primarily at a reference text and primer on immigration law for a general audience, end of chapter questions for further study are retained for faculty who may wish to use the book as a very inexpensive supplement for their usual adopted textbooks and assign these to students as assignments or use them for class discussion.
Coverage includes a brief history of the development of immigration law in the U. S. from colonial times to the present, and a detailed coverage of the various non-immigrant and immigrant visas available to individuals who want to visit the U. S. temporarily for pleasure, business, study or work, as well as those seeking to permanently immigrate here. Eligibility requirements and the process for applying for refugee and asylum status is also covered.
The last chapter provides detailed information about the process employers and employees are required to follow under federal law to verify the identity and authorization of employees they hire, as well as potential civil and criminal liability employers face if they fail to comply with the required Form I-9 process. Readers are advised that no textbook or reference guide on law can provide legal advice for the reader's specific circumstances.
That is something that only an attorney can do who is aware of all the relevant circumstances of their clients, knows both the substantive and procedural law that applies to their clients' specific situation, and can make informed predictions on how courts will likely interpret statutory law, Executive Orders, and relevant agency rules relevant to their clients' circumstances.
