Excerpt:"You can't be done already, " the blond woman told her before Jane could catch her breath and report on what she had seen. Jane caught herself about to curtsey, the same motion servants back in her family's house would make right before they apologized for something completely out of their control, but needed to be reported anyway. The duke didn't want the slaves to curtsey or bow. They were property, he always stated, not people and did not need to participate in the etiquettes of nobility.

It took some doing and rushing about, but Jane made the arrangements and escorted Marquissa Gabrielle up to the baron's room. It wasn't as nice as the marquissa's nor did it have the commanding view of the manor's gardens, but at the moment the marquissa wasn't so concerned with such niceties. The baron's manservant was just inside the door and actually announced them as they entered, as if the marquissa was entering a grand ballroom for a formal dance.
"The Marquissa Gabrielle Dundeain.and property." With a formal bow to the marquissa and the baron, the manservant exited backward out the door, closing it behind him. A little frisson of excitement traveled up from the base of Jane's spine. She liked being referred to as property. Her eyes went to the baron who was waiting at the window. He was tall, handsome and perfect. The sunlight made his blue eyes sparkle like sapphires and caught the highlights of his light brown hair turning it golden.
There was just a hint of a dimple in his lantern jaw. Jane felt herself getting wet at just the sight of him; she wondered what the marquissa was feeling."Gabby, " he said turning away from the window. "We've had some trouble already this afternoon."
