Résumé

Lord Julian Ashford, Earl of Wrexham, needs a wealthy bride. His ancestral estate is drowning in debt. His tenants depend on him. And every practical calculation points toward the same uncomfortable conclusion: he must marry for money before everything his family has neglected is lost. Miss Eliza Fairbourne has no fortune, no influence, and no expectation of a brilliant future. Living as a dependent companion in her aunt's household, she has learned that society values her usefulness far more than her opinions.
The last thing she needs is attention from one of London's most eligible noblemen. Then a chance encounter in a library sparks a scandal neither of them anticipated. As whispers spread through society, Wrexham proposes an arrangement designed to protect Eliza's reputation and silence the gossip. A temporary courtship should solve everything. It is practical. Respectable. Sensible. It should also be entirely without risk.
Instead, every shared evening, every ballroom conversation, and every carefully maintained appearance draws them closer together. Beneath Wrexham's reserved exterior lies a man carrying burdens he rarely speaks of. Beneath Eliza's quiet composure is a woman far stronger than society expects. But affection was never part of their agreement. With family expectations, financial pressures, and the demands of society closing in around them, Wrexham and Eliza must decide whether duty alone can shape a future-or whether some bargains are worth breaking for love.
