This is the story of two young men-their friendship, their trials, and their fight to survive long enough to return to the people they loved. The events in this novel are inspired by memories passed down through my family, first by my great-grandfather José, one of its protagonists, and later by relatives and friends who had known either him or Manuel, his dearest companion. As with all memories, some details may have faded, shifted, or grown with time.
What remains, however, is the spirit of what they lived: loyalty, sacrifice, endurance, and love.
