Résumé
Chapter 1: The Ashes of GranadaThe air over Granada was thick with the smell of smoke and endings. From their balcony in the Albaicín quarter, Layla bint Yusuf did not just see the Castilian banners flying over the Alhambra; she felt the world dissolve into ashes. The scent of burning books from the great library carried on the wind, a funeral pyre for a thousand years of knowledge."It is over, my child, " her aged mother whispered, her voice cracking as she wrapped their last loaf of bread in a cloth.
But her father, Yusuf the scholar, stood motionless, clutching a precious manuscript to his chest. "This is not just parchment, Layla. It is our soul. I cannot leave it for them."The thunder of heavy boots on the stairs made them all freeze. The door splintered open, revealing soldiers clad in cold steel. Their leader barked a command in a foreign tongue. Yusuf stepped in front of his family, a frail shield protecting his treasure.
A swift, brutal lunge from a soldier's sword, and he crumpled to the floor. The manuscript, now stained with his life's blood, fell from his grasp. Layla's scream was trapped in her throat. Her mother's wail filled the room. In her father's dying eyes, Layla saw not just pain, but a silent, urgent plea. The soldiers ransacked the room, indifferent to the life they had just extinguished. As they left, the silence they left behind was more terrifying than their violence.
Numbly, Layla helped her mother to her feet. They gathered their simple belongings-a few clothes, a waterskin, the stained manuscript her mother insisted on taking. They joined the river of the defeated flowing through the streets, a procession of shattered lives. Layla took one last look at her city, veiled in smoke. She carried its ashes in her heart, a cold ember of grief and a burning seed of anger.
Their home was behind them, and the unknown stretched ahead.
