In the first week of April, 1857, a woman leaves Grant County, Wisconsin, for one hundred sixty acres of bottom land on the Missouri River. Her husband has carried the decision since fall, sanding the corners off it, and raises it at table one evening as if it had just occurred to him. She takes the household apart over six weeks - one decision at a time, which is the only way it can be done - and carries her mother's lamp on her lap the whole way, because a lamp is the house.
What follows is her account of the keeping. She is setting these matters in order thirty years later, and she is scrupulous, and she is telling you the truth as she has it. She has left one stitch in the work where you will find it, so you would know her hand anywhere.
