This book discusses the history and origins of English for Specific Purposes
(ESP), the key concepts of ESP, and the issues related to designing an ESP
curriculum. Based on my modest experience as an English as a Foreign Language
(EFL) teacher, the needs of EFL instructors were identified to determine the
content of the curriculum. The content-based language program that EFL teachers
create, manage, and prepare for students and staff at the Iraqi Police College was
discussed.
Where possible, these concerns were supported by recent relevant
research. I sincerely hope that these reflections will help clarify the difficulties
faced by EFL instructors who also develop ESP curricula.
The book presents the design and evaluation of an online ESP program tailored for Iraqi Police Academy cadets, focusing on listening, speaking, and motivation. It includes a quasi-experimental study with 60 cadets, showing the program's effectiveness in improving skills and motivation.
