In the tea-brown light of a dying Victorian library, Layla Noor is racing time she does not have. Nine months into restoring the collection at Al-Hikmah, Manchester's last intact waqf estate, she has a roof that still leaks, a board of trustees running out of money, and a deadline that ends every December in the same place: not enough. What she does not have room for is a landscape architect. Zayd Mercer has come to survey the courtyard for a garden the trustees can't yet afford, and he has found something worth more than his fee: a salsabil, a nineteenth-century fountain built to slow water down rather than show it off, buried under sixty years of leaf mould.
