Pullman Brown returns to Port Haven with a bullet hole in the Brown Hound, half a shipment of antique furniture resting at the bottom of the Manthari Strait, and a promise that his next month will be quiet. Then a legendary aircraft drifts in from the outer islands. The battered seaplane is not the long-lost Blue Wanderer, as local pilots first believe, but the Azure Jackdaw-an aircraft missing for decades and carrying evidence tied to the Wanderer's final flight.
Hidden beneath its ruined instrument panel, Pullman finds a strange circular device whose inner light points somewhere beyond magnetic north. Historical aviation scholar Kessandra Trenfell identifies it as an Ancient Skyfaring Locator, a relic from a forgotten civilization that once operated a network of installations across the Lower Equator Belt. Its strongest signal points toward the Stormcast Reaches, a permanent storm system no pilot enters safely.
Somewhere inside waits the Sky Engine, a structure powerful enough to have created the storms concealing it. The Locator is only one piece of the activation sequence. Pirate commander Vasker Rimeholt has spent years gathering the others. His disciplined fleet possesses sections of a Sky Anchor Core, and he is preparing to enter the Reaches during a narrow atmospheric window. He believes the Engine will give him control of the skies.
