Failure Cascade

The Halo Array has survived for nearly three centuries. Twenty-seven orbital rings circle the planet Caul, supporting eight million people through an intricate web of structural frames, power grids, atmospheric systems, transit corridors, and maintenance protocols. The competing guilds responsible for those systems insist the Array remains stable. Structural engineer Merici Longwith knows that stable and safe are not always the same thing.
She arrives on Ring Verada after a supposed micrometeor swarm punches through its outer hull. The breach has already been sealed, the affected sector evacuated, and the official explanation appears routine-until Merici examines the damage pattern. Natural debris scatters. This impact was aimed. Joined by atmospheric specialist Tavi Oresh, energy engineer Rion Sevik, governance liaison Elvira Chen, systems analyst Kessa Amadee, and unaffiliated maintenance veteran Jorek Pallis, Merici begins finding irregularities far beyond one damaged panel.
Carbon-dioxide levels have been manipulated without triggering alarms. Scrubber calibrations bear forged credentials. Repairs have vanished from official logs. Maintenance incidents across multiple rings form a pattern centered on the most vulnerable points in the Array's shared infrastructure. Someone is building a failure cascade. The trail leads to Solen Varik, a brilliant safety engineer who warned the guild seven years earlier that decades of deferred maintenance were bringing the Array toward a coordinated multi-ring disaster.
His report was classified, his access revoked, and his career erased while the guild continued following the same policies he had proved were unsustainable. Now Varik intends to make his prediction impossible to ignore. His cascade is designed to disable systems, force evacuations, and expose the Array's true condition without causing mass casualties. But his safety margins are based on records that conceal how badly the rings have deteriorated.
What he believes is a controlled demonstration could overwhelm evacuation systems and turn into the catastrophe he was trying to prevent. As atmospheric, thermal, structural, and power failures spread from ring to ring, Merici's team must interrupt the cascade before it becomes self-sustaining. Yet simply stopping it will allow the guilds to bury the evidence again. To save the Array, Merici must perform an almost impossible balancing act: slow the failures enough to protect millions of residents, preserve the public emergency record, and force the institutions responsible for the crisis to confront the truth they suppressed.
Failure Cascade launches Halo Array, an epic hard-science-fiction mystery series of orbital engineering, aging megastructures, institutional secrecy, multidisciplinary investigations, and the unnoticed fractures that can bring an entire civilization to the edge of collapse.
