They stop for supper. The diner goes quiet when they walk in - not hostile, but recognizing, the way a room looks up at an engine it knows. Four miles out of town, the car dies of a fault that shouldn't be possible. The town could not be kinder. There is a room already made up for them. There is a casserole on the step, and a supper on the church lawn where forty strangers know their names. There is also a motel register with Brittney's mother's name in it, written in ink that is somehow still wet after twenty-nine years. And behind the church there are four ledgers going back to 1928, in which the population of Ash Hollow has never once been anything but 411. Every seven years, the town settles up. It has been seven years.
