Nobody set out to write a book. It started with late-night conversations with men. Conversations that burnt into memory. Decades of it. A working man wondering why his house no longer felt like home. Another posting money through a letterbox, hoping his daughter still lived there. A prison phone call that starts with, "I've only got two minutes left on this." Some men sit in their car for five minutes before going inside.
Hardly anyone asks why. Years passed by. The same things kept coming back. I noticed them, then wrote them down. Eventually they became this. LET ME GIVE YOU THE GAME is narrative non-fiction. Built from the lives of ordinary British men. Relationships. Work. Fatherhood. Starting again. Names and identifying details have been changed for privacy. Some of them found their way. Some of them didn't. You'll recognise somebody.
