In The Eyes Of Dambe

In the late 1940s, during the colonial era on a part of the savannah plains of the coast of Africa, a boy named Dambe was born into a royal family. His father, the Chief of Diya village, had died four days just before his birth, and tradition dictated that the first male born after a chief's death would be his successor. The elders had already begun preparations, polishing the old ceremonial stools, weaving fresh thatch for the royal hut's roof, setting aside the finest cowhide for the throne.
Everyone was waiting for a boy. When the cry rang out from inside the mud-walled birth room, a strong, clear cry, the kind the old woman said meant a warrior's lungs. The village celebrated through the night.  Fire danced on every compound wall. The successor had come. But when Dambe turned four, his family realized something was wrong. He was not like the other children. He was not just a boy.
