He followed my scent. I let him catch me. Evan understands roads better than relationships. As a courier traveling between human and Changed settlements, he's built a life around movement. Deliver the package. Learn the route. Never stay anywhere long enough for leaving to hurt. Then Rauk finds him. Huge, furred, sharp-clawed, and unmistakably Veyari, Rauk is a tracker whose senses make hiding almost impossible.
Especially when Evan's scent keeps telling him things Evan would rather keep to himself. Their journey begins with danger on the north road but leads to something much larger: hidden captives, enormous Changed no one knew existed, and evidence that the trafficking of Changed people reaches farther than either man imagined. Some of the creatures they discover are big enough to terrify entire settlements.
They're also prisoners. And Evan is beginning to understand that cages come in more forms than iron. His has always been the belief that freedom means never staying. Rauk never asks him to stop moving. He only gives Evan somewhere worth coming back to. But before they can have a future, they'll have to survive Bellweather-and free monsters powerful enough to shake the world when they finally stand.
