In Greenland, the ice remembers-the polar bears, the Inuit, and most of all, Bluie East Two. That's where 60, 000 rusted fuel drums have existed for the past eighty years. A Danish cleanup effort starts...then stops. Gar Randolph is then tapped to manage a U. S. effort to clear the mess. He's an untrusted outsider, facing bone-chilling cold made worse by relentless katabatic winds off the ice. Greenlanders want independence.
Others want Greenland's plentiful resources and strategic location. Before long, Gar uncovers foreign influence that chills him worse than the biting winds.
