A Shedding of Skin explores the liminal dawn of womanhood through a series of evocative poems. The first part, "Love Left, " centers on selfhood, longing, and the desire for emotional enmeshment. Part two, "Mouth Feel, " experiments with sound, rhythm, interruption, association, and the way words feels when physically formed with the mouth. The section is playful and thought-provoking as it skips from image to image in a concrete manifestation of metaphor.
In the final part, "Advice for Drowning Girls, " the poems ask questions about gender expectations, the pressure women face to make themselves smaller as they age, and how easy it is to lose oneself in the gray-beige of adulthood. Together, the collection has the effect of a breath of crisp air on a spring morning a week before April's final snow.
