Believer’s Baptism and Infant Baptism: A Biblical and Historical Evaluation

This short theological study by Paul Ashishdeep examines the biblical and historical development of Christian baptism, with particular focus on the debate between believer's baptism and infant baptism. Beginning with the New Testament understanding of baptism as full immersion associated with personal faith, the study explores the linguistic meaning of baptizo, the symbolic connection to the death and resurrection of Christ, and the consistent pattern of faith-based baptism found in early Christian practice.
The work then traces the historical evolution of baptism through the early church and patristic period, examining how pastoral concerns, cultural conditions, theological developments, and social pressures contributed to the emergence of infant baptism and alternative modes such as pouring and sprinkling. Key theological arguments are evaluated, including: The relationship between circumcision and baptism Early church testimony and practice The influence of Augustine and the doctrine of original sin The shift from baptism as a response of faith to a protective sacramental act While acknowledging the sincerity of different Christian traditions, this study concludes that believer's baptism by immersion has the strongest direct support in the New Testament, whereas infant baptism developed primarily through later theological and historical developments.
This booklet is intended for theology students, pastors, and readers seeking a clear and balanced understanding of one of Christianity's most enduring debates.
