Martin Greenough is a wealthy, fussy, and controlling elderly bachelor in a walled-off, grand mansion located in the Fenway area of Boston, Massachusetts. On the eve of his 75th birthday, Greenough summons his financially dependent heirs to announce a major, unwelcome change to his will and cut off their handouts.
Before the changes are finalized, Greenough is found shot dead in his study. The window is wide open, and a bizarre arrangement of playing cards is left on his desk.
