These seventeen stories represent a feeling.  The one of being alone in your home late at night.  When the sun has disappeared and there is only the darkness to be your friend.  The feeling that you're not quite safe and that there are things in that darkness that shouldn't be there.  You should simply hear the house settling or the faucet dripping.  Something normal, something that doesn't draw breath.
 Instead, you hear the signifier that there is something else out there.  Another person.  Another threat.  A heartbeat in the darkness.
