He was famed for his military genius, but his incredible overland campaign against Rome with foot soldiers, cavalry, baggage train, and elephants astonished the ancient world and has amazed historians ever since.
Later he proved, by masterful reorganization of the defeated Carthaginian government, that he was an astute statesman as well as a warrior.
