Hermes is under the punishment of Zeus, to submit to his own family and obey their every command.  To be humiliated, made to do whatever pleases them.  To be hurt at their whim.  Not all of Hermes' family wish to hurt him, he is loved by many, but even with them, the forced submission begins to take its toll.  And at the end of it, an invitation by Zeus to see Hermes either show he has learned his lesson.
