Ralth Eric Martin is a member of the Galactic Human Federation's Galactic Enforcement Rangers. Thirty years ago, his training officer was killed on his very first patrol. Due to her family's political connections, Ralth was exiled to the mining world of Bane's World on the Federation's frontier instead of being fired. Since then, he's been keeping law and order on a world full of rowdy miners and picking up a few scars along the way.
Now, he's counting down five days till he can retire. Then something Ralth never expected happens. A supply ship bringing goods from the Federation is blown apart just as it lands. Ralth finds he has to use his Ranger's investigation skills for the first time in his life. What he stumbles on is an ancient conspiracy hidden in the very fabric of the Federation. He will find himself thrown into a war.
