The Macdonalds of Cedar Park

The family enjoyed skiing and shopping on Saturday. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese forces. The surprise attack shocked the nation, sparking fear, uncertainty, and outrage across America. The country swiftly came together to support the war effort. Donald "Mac" Macdonald is recruited to work on the Manhattan Project, a super-secret project that fills him with pride but also with deep anxiety over its potentially dangerous nature.
On the home front, his wife, Bertha, copes with air-raid drills and blackout rules, rationing, a victory garden, and collects rubber, tin, and grease for the war effort, all while bearing the burden of keeping her husband's secret. She struggles with loneliness and fear for Mac's safety, but strives to stay strong for her family. Their oldest son, Sonny, expects to be drafted. He is both nervous and eager, hoping to join his friends in the 10th Mountain Division and asks for recommendations, wanting to prove himself but fearful of what lies ahead.
The youngest, Ig, is about to start high school. He becomes a messenger for the Manhattan Project in Boston and, at 15, obtains a special driver's license to deliver groceries and help care for his mother and grandmother. Ig is proud to help but misses the carefree days of childhood, feeling the weight of new responsibilities. Sacrifice, secrecy, and resilience shape the Macdonald family. Mac uses his engineering skills to help bring soldiers home, carrying the heavy burden of his confidential work.
Sonny struggles to survive battles in Italy's Apennine Mountains, showing courage despite his fear and observing the loss of those around him. Ig's carefree teenage years are spent working and going to school, learning the meaning of responsibility. Bertha is the glue that holds the family together, hoping the secrecy is worth the sacrifices. By the war's end, the family faces unexpected losses, but their endurance and unity stand as a testament to their strength amid uncertainty and hardship.
