Alzheimer's: What They Forget to Tell You: Trinidad and Tobago/ Caribbean Edition

As of 2025, nearly 772, 000 Canadians and 7.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. By 2030 Canada's number is expected to reach one million, and the US number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050. In Trinidad and Tobago, an estimated 5, 000 people were living with the disease in 2010, a number that has grown alongside the aging population across the Caribbean and other low and middle-income countries.
Alzheimer's disease is savage. It does not only rob a person of their memory, it takes their dignity and independence with it. This Caribbean Edition was written specifically for families across Trinidad and Tobago and the wider CARICOM region. Dr. Caron Leid was born in England to Trinidadian parents and spent her formative years in Trinidad attending Holy Name Convent in Port of Spain. Her mother Marlene was Trinidadian and it was her diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease that inspired this book.
The first edition was written for families navigating the Canadian healthcare system. Through her doctoral research examining sandwich generation caregivers across Canada, the United States, and Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Leid found that while the systems are different, the struggles caregivers face are universal. This edition includes practical resources, caregiver guidance, medication guides, palliative care navigation, and regional directories specific to the Caribbean healthcare experience.
