The author is Indigenous and a graduate of SFU's Writer's Studio, where she specialized in creative nonfiction.
The narrative is told in "scenes from a life" episodes that form a cohesive whole. Weird Rules to Follow won a 2024 PNBA Book Award, the 2023 IODE Violet Downey Book Award, the 2023 Jean Little First-Novel Award, the 2023 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People and the 2023 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award.
