What does it mean to be a 'competent human being'? This small tract explores why we are not so well served by all the many personal growth and self-development literature and programs out in the world today. It offers a simpler approach to embedding the kinds of virtues (personality attributes) we look for in others and hope we display in interactions with them. A few basic principles underpin our ideas, and show how a straightforward understanding of our natural biological self-defence systems should be accommodated to help us master all those best virtues we see in others.
