'Boy'' is a controversial 1931 modernist novel by British author James Hanley that details the grim, brutal life and early death of a 13-year-old boy from the Liverpool docks. The book rejected traditional, romantic maritime tropes and famously became the subject of a high-profile obscenity trial in the United Kingdom during the 1930s. Arthur Fearon is an intelligent, delicate nearly 13-year-old boy growing up in a poor Liverpool family.
He aspires to stay in school and become a chemist. Due to severe financial strain, his abusive father forces him to leave school early to work in the hellish Liverpool docks. Traumatized by his very first day of backbreaking labor, Arthur flees his home and stows away on a steamer ship bound for Alexandria, Egypt. Instead of finding freedom, Arthur is subjected to extreme systemic cruelty, physical exhaustion, harsh adult vices, and sexual abuse by the crew. Despite being heavily suppressed, Boy received praise from prominent literary figures of the era, such as William Faulkner and Anthony Burgess.
Drawing heavily from Hanley's own background in the merchant navy, the novel is now critically re-appraised by modern scholars as a foundational, uncompromising masterpiece of 20th-century working-class and maritime fiction.
