This is book 4 in the A Kiss Before Strangling series. The two stories are taken from his life before the series starts in 1954. Stories are not in sequence. The first story "A year in Hell" covers his being hired by the Tillman PD in March 1942 till he's drafted in February 1943. He has to stop a ring of serial wife abusers who are city officials his days get worse. The second story "Murder in Alabama" covers April 1943 after Bootcamp when he's assigned to an army camp in Alabama till he's sent to Europe in February 1944.
