The Odyssey: A Quick Read edition

The Odyssey is an epic poem that tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. The poem was performed orally by an aoidos or rhapsode and was more likely to be heard than read. The narrative significance of certain groups in the poem, such as women and slaves, is still reflected on by scholars. The poem begins after the end of the Trojan War, from which Odysseus has still not returned because he angered Poseidon, the god of the sea.
Accompanied by Athena, Odysseus' son Telemachus departs for the Greek mainland to the household of Nestor. Odysseus encounters many perils during his journey, including the Cyclops, Circe, and the sirens. After returning home, Odysseus tests the loyalty of his household and kills the suitors who have been courting his wife Penelope. The Odyssey is widely regarded as a timeless classic and remains one of the oldest works of extant literature commonly read by Western audiences. Discover a new way to read classics with Quick Read.
