“ Rebecca Makkai ”

Yes, The Great Believers is a story about the AIDS epidemic, and yes it's a story about death and illness and mourning. But Rebecca Makkai's novel is not sad, it is not full of despair, it is not as dark as you would expect. There's a lot of light in there, in this group of characters so charming and so endearing. This is a novel about family – either the one you're born into or the one you chose. This is a novel about courage, hope, optimism. Beautifully done.
