Natif de la préfecture de Kumamoto, au Japon le 1er janvier 1975, Eiichirô Oda est fasciné, depuis tout petit, par les mangas et par l'univers des vikings et pirates. Ainsi, après avoir reçu le 44e prix Tezuka pour sa nouvelle Wanted en 1992, il décide d'abandonner ses études pour se lancer dans la carrière de mangaka. En 1994, il se rend à Tokyo et devient assistant de trois grands noms du secteur : Shinobu Kaitani, Masaya Tokuhiro et Nobuhiro Watsuki. De cette formidable expérience, son oeuvre phare, One Piece, voit le jour en 1997 et connait un succès immédiat. Référence du genre shonen (manga pour adolescents et jeunes adultes), il est caractérisé par son humour, ses personnages hauts en couleur et attachants, ses combats intenses et une bonne dose d'émotion.
