Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), an Irish writer, settled in London in 1756 and contributed to periodicals before publishing his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766). He also wrote the poem The Deserted Village (1770) and the comedy She Stoops to Conquer (1773). He was a member of Samuel Johnson's Literary Club.

Goldsmith failed at medicine, teaching and the church, wandered Europe playing the flute for meals, and - the story goes - sold this manuscript overnight to keep his landlady from having him arrested.
