Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863-1935) was an English journalist and author. He wrote for several Yorkshire newspapers before turning to fiction, producing over 200 books in various genres. His body of work includes the detective novel The Paradise Mystery, along with many other mysteries and historical novels.

A stranger falls from the Cathedral gallery in a quiet English close, and the dead man had come to Wrychester to look for something that a canon, a clockmaker and a solicitor would all rather he had not found. Fletcher was a Yorkshire journalist who wrote more than two hundred books, and this 1920 novel is the one that made him famous when Woodrow Wilson named him as a favourite. The cathedral politics are exactly observed.
