Résumé

Roger Shattuck's definitive and entertaining work, the result of a lifetime's thinking about Proust, is an indispensable introduction to one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. This vivid reinterpretation of In Search of Lost Time shows Proust's masterpiece in a fresh light, as a highly readable work filled with vivid places, intensely human characters and exquisite humour. Shattuck also demolishes many of the myths that surround Proust himself, looking beyond the iconic image of the decadent aesthete reclining in his cork-lined room, to reveal a man who lived in the real world and wrote about it with passion. This work, which will become a standard guide for a new generation of readers, is essential for anyone who wishes to explore the true pleasures of Proust.
