Résumé

Otl Aicher (1922-1991) is a legendary figure from the world of contemporary design. In 1951, along with Inge Scholl and Max Bill, he founded the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (Ulm School of Design), which he ran together with Tomás Maldonado and Hans Gugelot between 1956 and 1958, and then single-handedly from 1962 to 1964. Aicher was the designer behind the visual communication system of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games with his magnificent pictogram designs.
This publication brings together numerous unpublished materials from three key projects in Otl Aicher's career : the industrialised construction system devised for Braun in 1960 based on the exhibition centre pavilions that he had designed some years before together with Hans Gugelot ; Rotis, the mill that he transformed into his home and work place, where he designed up to six new constructions between 1970 and 1991 ; and the brand image and signage system of Metro Bilbao - an assignment that came about through his working relationship and friendship with Norman Foster - which he was engaged in from 1988 to 1991.
Braun, Rotis and Metro Bilbao join together in this book edited by Gillermo Zuaznabar with articles by Norman Foster, Yves Zimmermann, René Spitz, Neus Moyano and Florian Aicher, who delve into the thinking, craft, and life course of this design master.
