Résumé

Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her-luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours her life is changed - forever. This charming, funny, lighthearted 1938 novel was a bestseller on its first appearance and has been reprinted many times since Persephone Books first reissued it, complete with its original illustrations, for a new generation of readers.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day was read on BBC Radio 4 by Maureen Lipman. The film, starring Frances McDormand, Amy Adams and Ciaran Hinds, was released in 2008.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Winifred Watson

WINIFRED WATSON (1906-2002) grew up in Newcastle and was a secretary until, in 1935, she married Leslie Pickering, the manager of a timber firm. She wrote "two rather strong dramas... but when the publishers received a book that was fun they would not accept it. When they did bring out Miss Pettigrew, I was proved right." Three more novels appeared, then after the birth of her son in 1941 Winifred Watson stopped writing and lived quietly in Newcastle for the rest of her life.
