Résumé

Dancing fairies, ethereal butterflies, ancient Chinese art and lore, classical music, celestial bodies, the ocean's depths, Art Deco, and even contemporary films are but some of the themes explored in the exquisite, one-of-a-kind pieces comprising the second volume - or Opus 2 - of Anna Hu's Symphony of Jewels. For Hu, a cello virtuoso turned master jewelry designer, all of the arts and the entire natural world inspire - and are reflected in - her jewels.
Every piece features not only the rarest stones and most intricate design but also the most technically advanced execution. Organized in five sections, Opus 2 begins with a series of ballerina fairies, delicate dancers swathed in flower-inspired tutus. Chinese art, myths, and symbols, ranging from leaping koi to lotus flowers and representing power and transformation, are the inspiration for the second section.
The section called Duet and Trio showcases gorgeous two - and three-piece sets featuring magnificent matching stones. The Contemporary Art section consists of extraordinarily imaginative, complex pieces referencing a wide range of themes, from the sun, stars, and moon to the ocean and marine flora and fauna, to the Art Deco architecture of New York. The book ends with Hu's remarkable series of butterflies, each inspired by a beloved piece of music and a mythological god or goddess.
With an illuminating introduction by jewelry historian Janet Zapata and text by jewelry expert Sarah Davis, Opus 2 presents, as François Curiel writes in the Foreword, Hu's "unique equilibrium of proportion, construction, color, and dazzle. Sophisticated aesthetics, contemporary elegance, a whispering yet heart-stirring "WOW."

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie d'Anna Hu

Anna Hu is an internationally renowned jewelry designer who approaches her art with a distinctly East-meets-West philosophy and aesthetic that is heavily influenced by both cultures. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in cello performance and went on to receive a Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) certificate from the Gemological Institute of America, a degree in jewelry design from F.I.T., a masters in 19th-century French jewelry from Parsons School of Design, and a masters in arts administration from Columbia University.
After working for Christie's, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston, she founded her namesake brand, Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie, at the age of thirty and opened her first boutique one year later in New York's famed Plaza Hotel. A prodigy cellist, Hu's design inspirations are often rooted in her deep devotion to classical music. She is as much a scholar as she is an artist, and her designs reflect that intellectual sophistication.
Her French-Chinese jewelry brand specializes in one-of-a-kind pieces executed by French ateliers using the rarest stones in the world. Janet Zapata is a renowned historian of decorative arts and jewelry and the author of The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, The Art of Zadora, and Jeweled Garden. She has curated many jewelry exhibitions, including The Nature of Diamonds at the American Museum of Natural History.
Sarah Davis is a jewelry historian, author, and editor for the American Society of Jewelry Historians. She was editor and a co-author of Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era : The Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan Collection. François Curiel is the chairman for Europe and Asia at Christie's.
