Aan het einde van Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them wordt met hulp van Newt Scamander de machtige duistere tovenaar Gellert Grindelwald gevangengenomen in New York. Grindelwald weet echter te ontkomen en verzamelt volgers om zich heen die geen enkel vermoeden hebben van wat zijn werkelijke doel is: de heerschappij van tovenaars over alle modderbloedjes en dreuzels.
