Résumé

The ability to recognize key physical signs on examination of the child is vital in the diagnosis of pediatric endocrine and growth disorders. Pediatric Endocrinology and Growth illustrates these physical signs in color and reviews the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and treatment for each condition, providing a concise overview of the complex sub-specialty. This illustrated text describes the processes of physical examination and history-taking, with guides to the construction and interpretation of growth charts, measurement techniques and physical signs. It then focuses on specific problems, from growth disorders to glucose homeostasis, early or late sexual development, abnormal genitalia, goiter, failure to thrive and obesity. Each chapter reviews the pathology : Concise and structured text that whilst covering all pediatric endocrine disorders at the level required by an endocrinologist gives the generalist all the key information to diagnose and treat the more common conditions. The appendix guides the clinician as to which test to request, which genetic tests may aid diagnosis and gives normal values to aid in the interpretation of the results. Growth charts show progress of typical cases, and indicate possible treatment outcomes. Treatment options are discussed for each condition guiding the clinician to the management plan. More than 470 figures and diagnostic images, most in full color, facilitate diagnosis and physiology of the disorders as well as the differential diagnosis and preferred treatment options. Guidance is given on which cases should be referred to a specialist pediatric endocrinologist.
