This book contains forty articles that were published in The Mathematical Intelligencer during its first eighteen years. The selection exhibits the wide variety of articles that have appeared during these years, ranging from general-interest essays on the history of mathematics, to lucid expositions of important recent discoveries. The editors provide an introduction to the selections. Since its first issue, The Mathematical Intelligencer has been the main forum for exposition and debate between some of the world's most renowned mathematicians, covering not only history and history-making mathematics, but also including many controversies that surround all facets of the subject.
