Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres / Ellsworth Kelly is the exhibitioncatalog of the French Academy of Rome - Villa Medici exhibition ofthe same name, which opened in June 2010.The catalog presents the never before seen works of Ellsworth Kellyalong with a selectionof Ingres� drawings and paintings. It reflects the striking visualefficiency of the exhibition, while maintaining the individualreadability of each work for an exceptional presentation of art acrosstime and space.
The catalog will include critical texts in threelanguages (French, Italian,and English) by �ric de Chassey, director of the French Academy inRome, and New York�s Whitney Museum curator Carter Foster.BIOGRAPHIESEllsworth Kelly was born on May 31, 1923 in Newburgh, New York.Throughout his career, he crossed the traditional boundariesbetween painting, sculpture, and architecture. From 1950 to 1951,Kelly taught at the American School in Paris.
He had his firstRetrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1973,and had a career retrospective in 1996 organized by the Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum in New York. This year he will be coming tothe Eternal City for his exhibition at the French Academy in Rome -Villa Medici.Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was more severe in his theories ofart than in his own production, both in concept and in the handlingof tone and texture.
His basic belief in "art for art's sake," his richcolor, and his brilliant drawing make Ingres a truly universal artist.�ric de Chassey has been a professor of art history at the Universit�Fran�ois-Rabelais di Tours since 1999 and a member of the InstitutUniversitaire de France since 2004. He has published books, essays,and catalogs on art from the 20th and 21st centuries on abstraction,Matisse, American art and photography, and has curated numerousshows in France and abroad.Mr.
de Chassey was nominated as the director of the FrenchAcademy in Rome in 2009.Carter Foster graduated Magna Cum Laude in art history from theUniversity of Georgia and earned his Master�s in 1991 from Brown.After holding positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and theNew York Public Library, he joined the staff of the drawingdepartment at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1996 and became itschief in 2002.
While there, he co-curated the first major exhibition ofCleveland�s drawing collection which toured to Houston and NYCamong other places, and co-authored the accompanying catalogue.Mr. Foster joined the Whitney in 2004.
